Farm focused, focus definition science is a new approach to studying the relationship between the structure of the soil and the plants that it feeds on.
It involves comparing different crops grown in different locations and studying the patterns of carbon fixation.
Farm focused, Focus definition science uses the results to improve crop yield and feed efficiency, and to better understand plant breeding and management.
Dr John Anderson from the University of Exeter in England says it will give farmers better control over their crop production.
“The focus on plant breeding is a fundamental part of the research that has led to the development of these systems,” he says.
“What it’s saying is ‘what would you do if you were in a climate similar to this, and you were producing a different crop?'””

“You’re trying to make sense of a complex system of complex processes, and in a way, it is very hard,” he explains.
“We have the data now, but we have to understand what’s happening in each crop.”
Dr Anderson said the aim was to understand the mechanisms that cause soil to behave differently than it does under certain conditions.
“If we want to understand why some things like drought or disease can have an effect on the yield, we need to understand when those conditions occur, and when the crop responds,” he said.
“What we do in this field is we look at the soil to understand which conditions trigger that response.”
That’s a very challenging field, but it is also a very exciting field.
“Dr Andrew Fergus from the UK’s National Institute for Biological Sciences in London says the field of focus definition has a long history.”
One of the early studies that was done was the one that showed that plants respond differently to different environmental conditions, and so we have this very clear, well defined picture of what the climate is like,” he told Al Jazeera.”
And so what we’ve done is look at that and we’ve been looking at that for a long time, and we have been able to see some of the relationships between those climate variables, like the drought, and the response of plants.
“Dr Fergus said it is important to understand where the plant is growing and where the nutrients are coming from, but not how much nutrients are available.”
As soon as we look into the genetics of the crop, we can actually see where those nutrients are being supplied from the environment,” he explained.”
So if you want to grow an oilseed rape or a rice that has a high nitrogen load, that’s where you have to take it and you can get a high yield, but the nitrogen load is also in the environment.
“Dr Matt O’Keefe from the Australian National University says he is excited about the work being done in the field.”
This is a field that has been under the radar for a while and it’s finally starting to get the attention it deserves,” he tells Al Jazeera from Melbourne.”

I’m excited that we’re going to be able to do more research on these crops in a much wider variety of places, and also look at how these crops respond to different climatic conditions.
